Why is a Bone Marrow Examination Done?
Clear, reassuring explanation of the procedure, safety precautions, pain control, and what patients should expect in Dhaka.
Clinical Diagnostic Overview
Many patients feel anxious when a bone marrow test is recommended. In reality, the procedure takes about 15 to 20 minutes and is performed under local anesthesia, similar to a dental procedure.
A tiny sample of fluid (aspirate) and a small core of tissue (biopsy) are collected from the back of the hip bone (posterior iliac crest). Patients can walk, eat, and return home shortly after the procedure with minimal discomfort.
⚠️ When Specialist Hematology Consultation is Advised
Inform the doctor before the procedure if you are taking blood thinners (Aspirin, Clopidogrel, Warfarin) or have an active fever.
