How to Understand Your CBC Blood Report
A patient-friendly guide explaining what hemoglobin, platelets, WBC, MCV, and ESR numbers mean in plain language.
Clinical Diagnostic Overview
A Complete Blood Count (CBC) report can seem like a confusing maze of acronyms. Here is what the primary indices reflect:
- Hemoglobin (Hb): Carries oxygen to your organs. Low levels mean anemia.
- WBC (White Blood Cells): Body’s defense system. High in infections or marrow disorders.
- Platelets: Crucial for clotting blood and stopping cuts from bleeding.
- MCV (Mean Corpuscular Volume): Indicates the physical size of your red blood cells. Very small cells (microcytic) point to iron deficiency or Thalassemia trait.
- ESR (Erythrocyte Sedimentation Rate): Measures non-specific systemic inflammation in the body.
⚠️ When Specialist Hematology Consultation is Advised
If an automated report shows bold numbers outside normal ranges, bring the printed sheet for clinical review rather than self-medicating with vitamins.
